Cambridge IELTS 18 (2023) – Academic & General Training
Publication Date: 2023
Book 18, from mid-2023, follows the format: four authentic tests in each of the Academic and General Training books. Cambridge’s catalogs note “Cambridge IELTS 18 contains four authentic IELTS exam papers”. Students have reported that all Cambridge 16–18 books offer high-quality practice reflecting recent exam difficulty. (Book 18’s speaking and writing tasks are slightly updated to current trends.)
- Key Features: 4 practice tests per module, answer key, audio recordings available.
- Additional Notes: As Cambridge notes, books 1–8 differ in format, so for most up-to-date practice start at 9 or above.
Cambridge IELTS 17 (2022) – Academic & General Training
Publication Date: 2022
Cambridge 17 is a popular recent edition with four tests (AC & GT). Each book has detailed answer keys and transcripts. Cambridge 17’s resource bank also provides model answers and listening script to simulate real conditions. In our experience, Cambridge 17’s tasks are slightly easier than the real test, so they are excellent for building confidence before moving to 19–21.
- Key Features: 4 tests each, Academic/GT, explanatory answer key.
- Tip: Use Cambridge 17 (or later) when you have intermediate exam skills.
Cambridge IELTS 16 (2021) – Academic & General Training
Publication Date: 2021
Book 16 includes four Academic tests and four GT tests. Each test is accompanied by answer keys and listening transcripts. According to IELTS experts, Cambridge 15–16 practice sets were slightly easier than later books. However, they still provide valuable pattern practice. We recommend Cambridge 16 for initial preparation, and then progressing to Book 17+ for closer-to-real difficulty.
- Key Features: 4 papers per book, audio recordings (CD) included, model answers.
Cambridge IELTS 15 (2020) – Academic & General Training
Publication Date: 2020
Cambridge 15 is often cited as a top choice for IELTS practice. Both Academic and GT editions have four papers, plus transcripts and model essays with examiner commentary. (Cambridge 15 introduced even cleaner answer guides.) Many test-takers still study Cambridge 15 because its speaking topics and reading passages remain relevant.
- Key Features: 4 practice tests, extensive answer explanations, sample responses.
- Expert Note: Magoosh emphasizes its balanced coverage of Academic and GT tasks.
Cambridge IELTS 14 (2019) – Academic & General Training
Publication Date: 2019
Book 14 continued the series tradition: four tests per book, with CDs and answer keys. Cambridge 14 was the last pre-COVID edition; it contains realistic topics and audio. It set the stage for more recent pattern changes seen in 15–19. Useful for practice and often used in classrooms.
- Key Features: 4 tests, CDs for listening, answer scripts.
- Historical Note: Topics (e.g. environment, education) remain good practice material.
Cambridge IELTS 13 (2018) – Academic & General Training
Publication Date: 2018
Another four-test volume. Cambridge 13’s advantage is its older vocabulary and slower audio relative to the current test, making it slightly easier for beginners. (Cambridge 13 included some GT modules in Academic book, like older books 10–12.)
- Key Features: 4 Academic tests, plus extra GT modules (explanation included).
- User Tip: Use it to build familiarity; then move to later books for realism.
Cambridge IELTS 12 (2017) – Academic & General Training
Publication Date: 2017
Cambridge 12 includes four complete tests, sample answers, and transcripts. It’s slightly easier than newer editions. It set the template for modern volumes: each Academic book had all 4 tests, and extra GT reading/writing tasks (the GT book was still separate).

Cambridge IELTS 11 (2016) – Academic & General Training
Publication Date: 2016

- Key Features: 4 tests (Academic only in this volume), transcripts, answer scripts.
Cambridge IELTS 10 (2015) – Academic & General Training

Cambridge 10 stands out because it was sold as one book including both modules. As the Vancouver Public Library summary states: “It contains four complete tests for Academic candidates, plus extra Reading and Writing modules for General Training candidates.” The Student’s Book with Answers has answers and tapescripts; separate CDs and downloads are available. Cambridge 10’s answers include band scores and explanations for some essays.

How to Choose & Use Cambridge IELTS Books
The best book depends on your level and exam date. As a rule, start with the most recent volumes: practice with Book 18–21 first, since they mirror today’s format. Then use earlier books (15–17) to gain extra practice. Each book is reusable for multiple test runs. Remember: these books provide practice tests, not test strategies. Always simulate real exam conditions: time yourself, use headphones for listening, and review answers immediately. After each test, study the answer key and sample writing answers to understand band requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Q: Which Cambridge IELTS book should I start with?
A: Begin with the most recent volumes (Book 18–21) for up-to-date content. These mirror the current exam structure. Then work backwards (17,16,…10). Each book has four full tests, so even older books are useful for extra practice. - Q: How many tests are in each Cambridge IELTS book?
A: Four complete tests in every Academic book (plus additional GT modules in some). Cambridge’s official description confirms “four authentic IELTS exam papers” per book. - Q: Do Cambridge books include answers and audio?
A: Yes. Each Cambridge book’s Student Book with Answers provides full answer keys and listening transcripts. Recent editions also have downloadable audio (or CDs) and even sample answers with examiner comments for writing. - Q: Where can I get official Cambridge IELTS materials?
A: Official Cambridge practice tests (the Books) are sold by Cambridge University Press. You can purchase them on Cambridge’s site or in bookstores. The British Council notes that Cambridge publishes the Official IELTS Practice Materials and other guides. Our site provides review links and free PDF downloads (for study only), e.g. “Cambridge IELTS 19 Free PDF” pages. Always use authorized sources whenever possible. - Q: What’s the difference between Academic and General Training Cambridge books?
A: Academic books are for the IELTS Academic test; General Training books for the GT test. Each Academic book has four tests. GT books also have four tests but with GT-appropriate content. In some early editions, Academic books included extra GT reading/writing (e.g. Book 10). Always choose the version matching your test type.
